Le faubourg, ou avenue Marcellin Maurel, occupe l’emplacement des anciens fossés qui séparaient la ville du faubourg.

Les maisons de la ville s’ouvrirent sur l’extérieur vers 1840. Le pontis (ou passage voûté) ne fut ouvert qu’en 1863.

Les arbres qui ornaient le faubourg ont disparu en 1910 pour faire place au tramway.
