Built in the 4th century on the site of a Roman temple, the cathedral took its present form in the 11th or 12th century. Outside, on the left, is the St.Lambert tower, dating from the 12th century.
The stone on the left of the porch bears a dedication by the city of Vintium in homage to the Emperor Gordian III. It dates from the year 239. The stone on the right of the porch was engraved, in December 220, with a dedication to the Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Pius Felix, better known as Heliogabalus.
From the Place Godeau there is an excellent view of the Romanesque chevet and the bell-tower, with 13th-century crenellations.
Inside the Cathedral there is a mosaic by Marc Chagall ‘Moses saved from the waters’, and a unique ensemble of 17th-century statues in polychrome wood, previously exhibited in the Calvary chapels.
